Chapter 8
The Last Pulse

The world shattered.
Maelis fell.
She hit the ground hard, the impact jarring through her bones, her vision swimming as neon fragments rained down like shards of glass. The air smelled of ozone and burning wire, the scent of the city’s dying breath. She coughed, blood flecking her lips, but she forced herself up, her hands trembling.
The chamber was gone.
In its place stretched an endless void, a chasm of blackness where the Keeper had stood. The sphere was shattered beyond repair, its fragments scattered like broken stars. The neon veins that had pulsed with stolen memories now flickered weakly, their light dimming like a dying star.
And then—silence.
Too much silence.
Maelis turned.
Jaxen was sprawled on the ground, his chest rising and falling in shallow breaths. Orinaya knelt beside him, her hands pressed against his wound, her face pale. Drevic stood nearby, his rifle still in his hands, his eyes wide with shock. Caelis was nowhere to be seen.
"*Caelis?*"
No answer.
Maelis pushed herself to her feet, her legs unsteady. She scanned the ruins, her heart pounding. The chamber was empty.
Then she saw it.
A figure lay motionless on the ground, half-buried beneath the wreckage of the Keeper’s remains. Maelis moved toward it, her stomach twisting.
It was Caelis.
Her skin was gray, her breath shallow. She was alive—but barely. Maelis dropped to her knees beside her, her hands trembling as she pressed them to Caelis’s chest.
"*You’re alive?*"
Caelis’s lips parted, her voice a whisper. "*The Gate… it took me. But I came back.*"
Maelis’s breath caught. "*What do you mean?*"
"*I saw it,*" Caelis rasped. "*The past. The future. The Archive. It’s all the same thing. And it’s hungry.*"
Orinaya stood, her voice sharp. "*We need to move. Now.*"
Maelis nodded, helping Caelis to her feet. They stumbled toward the exit, the chamber’s walls groaning around them. The neon veins pulsed weakly, their light flickering like a dying heartbeat.
Jaxen groaned, pushing himself up. "*What the hell just happened?*"
Drevic’s voice was grim. "*We opened the Gate. And now it’s opened us.*"
Maelis didn’t answer. She didn’t have to. They all knew what that meant.
They had become part of the past.
They had become part of the Archive.
And the Archive was not done with them.
---
They emerged into the streets of Veridian, the city’s neon veins flickering weakly, their light casting long shadows on the cracked pavement. The streets were empty, the crowds gone. The Archive’s drones still patrolled, their red eyes scanning the ruins.
"*We need to find a way out,*" Orinaya said, her voice urgent. "*Before they realize what we’ve done.*"
Maelis nodded. "*The Gate is gone. But the past is still here. And it’s still watching.*"
Jaxen’s voice was grim. "*So what now? We just run?*"
Maelis looked at him, her eyes burning with determination. "*No. We fight.*"
Drevic’s voice was cold. "*For what?*"
"*For the future,*" Maelis said. "*For the past. For the present. For the city.*"
Caelis’s voice was weak. "*The Archive is not the only one watching. The past is watching too. And it’s not done with us.*"
Maelis didn’t hesitate. She turned to Jaxen, her eyes burning with determination. "*We need to find the others. The ones who made this place. The ones who can help us.*"
Jaxen’s voice was grim. "*And if they can’t?*"
Maelis smiled, her eyes burning with determination. "*Then we’ll make our own future.*"

They reached the heart of Veridian, the city’s central plaza, where the Archive’s core stood like a monolith of black glass. The streets were empty, the crowds gone. The Archive’s drones still patrolled, their red eyes scanning the ruins.
Maelis stopped, her breath catching. She looked at the others, her eyes burning with determination.
"*We can’t fight the Archive. Not here. Not now.*"
Orinaya’s voice was grim. "*Then what?*"

They reached the edge of the city, where the ruins of the old world stretched into the distance. The neon veins flickered weakly, their light casting long shadows on the cracked pavement. The Archive’s drones were gone, their red eyes scanning the ruins.

The world shattered.
And in the silence that followed, Maelis knew one thing for certain.
They were not done.
But this time, they would not be the ones who paid.
They would be the ones who changed everything.
