Chapter 11
The Gaze Unblinks

The apartment was a graveyard of secrets.
Sable moved through the dim glow of Renata’s living room like a ghost, her fingers brushing the edges of the file Marinus had left behind—photos of hollowed faces, interviews where the words had been stitched into place, the same phrase repeated like a prayer: *"It’s just the pressure."* The same *stillness* behind the eyes, the same way the lips would part just a fraction too wide before the words came.
Renata was already at the window, peeling back the curtains with trembling hands. The street below was alive with the usual neon hum of the city—taxis, laughter, the distant wail of a siren—but something was *off*. The way the lights flickered. The way the shadows didn’t quite stretch right.
*"They’re here,"* Renata had said.
Sable didn’t ask *who*. She already knew.
The door to the apartment slammed shut behind them.
Renata turned, her breath shallow. *"We can’t stay here."*
*"Where then?"*
*"Anywhere but here."* Renata’s voice was a thread, pulled too tight. She grabbed Sable’s arm, her nails digging in. *"They know what we know. They *always* know."*
Sable followed her down the fire escape, her pulse hammering in her throat. The city stretched below them, a glittering maze of worship. Every billboard, every news ticker, every face on a screen—all of it *watching*.
*"Marinus said we cut off the attention,"* Sable muttered. *"But how? We can’t just—"*
*"We don’t have a choice."* Renata didn’t look back. *"Not if we want to live."*
They moved through the alleys, past the glow of a late-night diner where a group of fans huddled around a TV, their faces alight with adoration. One of them turned, caught Sable’s eye, and smiled—a smile that didn’t quite reach the eyes. Didn’t quite *blink*.
Renata’s grip tightened. *"You see that?"*
Sable swallowed. *"See what?"*
*"The way they *look* at you. Like you’re already one of them."*
A chill ran down Sable’s spine.
They reached a safe house—a cramped, windowless apartment above a laundromat, rented under a false name. The moment they stepped inside, the door locked itself behind them with a *click* that felt like a gunshot.
Renata exhaled sharply. *"Good."*
Sable’s phone buzzed. A text from Marisol:
**Marisol:** *You’ve gone dark. Media’s losing their minds. They’re calling you a fraud, a hack, a—*
Sable’s stomach twisted. She hadn’t even told her editor her plan.
She hadn’t even *decided* yet.
She typed back, her fingers flying:
**Sable:** *I need you to trust me.*
**Marisol:** *What are you doing?*
**Sable:** *Something that might not end well.*
A pause. Then:
**Marisol:** *You’re scaring me.*
**Sable:** *Good.*
She turned off her phone.
Renata was already at the table, spreading out more photos—celebrities, all of them, their faces frozen in that same eerie smile. *"They’re not just actors,"* she said softly. *"They’re not even *people* anymore. They’re vessels. And they’re *hungry*."*
Sable’s throat went dry. *"How do we stop them?"*
Renata’s voice was hollow. *"We make them *unbelievable*."*
*"How?"*
*"We take their faces away."*
Sable’s blood turned to ice.
---
The first sign came at dawn.
A knock at the door.
Renata froze. *"They can’t know where we are."*
*"Who?"*
*"Them."* She pressed her back against the wall, her eyes wide. *"The ones who follow."*
Sable moved to the peephole, her heart in her throat.
A man stood outside—tall, broad-shouldered, his face half-lit by the streetlamp. He smiled, and for a second, Sable thought she recognized him.
Then she saw the *wrongness* in his eyes.
The way his lips didn’t quite move when he spoke.
*"Sable Voss?"* His voice was warm, rich, the kind of voice that made people lean in. The kind of voice that made them *believe*.
She didn’t answer.
He knocked again. *"I know you’re in there. I’ve been watching."*
Sable’s breath hitched.
The man outside wasn’t just a fan. He wasn’t just a *person*.
He was one of *them*.
---
Renata’s hands shook as she pulled the knife from her boot.
*"We don’t have a choice,"* she whispered.
Sable nodded.
The door burst open.
Aurelio Vance filled the frame, his presence so vast it made the air itself seem to thicken. His smile was perfect, his suit impeccable, his eyes—*God*, his eyes—were too still, too *wrong*.
*"Sable,"* he said, stepping inside. *"I’ve been waiting for you."*
Renata lunged.
The knife flashed—but Aurelio *moved* too fast. His hand closed around her wrist, his grip like iron.
*"Oh, Renata,"* he murmured, his voice dripping with something that wasn’t quite pity. *"You shouldn’t have run."*
Sable backed away, her mind racing.
*"You’re not supposed to be here,"* she said, her voice steady despite the terror clawing up her throat. *"You’re supposed to be on TV."*
Aurelio’s smile didn’t waver. *"And yet, here I am."*
*"Why?"*
He tilted his head, considering. *"Because you’re interesting, Sable. You’re *real*."*
Renata twisted in his grip, her face contorted with pain. *"Let me go."*
*"Soon,"* Aurelio said gently. *"But first, I think you should hear something."*
He released her.
Renata crumpled to the floor, gasping.
Aurelio turned to Sable, his hands clasped behind his back. *"You see, Sable, the thing about worship… it’s not just about the famous. It’s about the *believers*."*
Sable’s skin prickled. *"What are you talking about?"*
*"The fans,"* Aurelio said, his voice like honeyed venom. *"The ones who *need* us to be perfect. The ones who would *die* for us."*
Renata coughed, blood flecking her lips.
Sable’s stomach twisted. *"You’re not here to kill us."*
*"No."* Aurelio’s smile widened. *"I’m here to *offer* you a choice."*
*"What choice?"*
*"To join us."*
A beat of silence.
Then—
The apartment door *shattered*.
Renata screamed.
And from the hallway, a chorus of voices rose up, singing in unison:
*"It’s just the pressure."*
Sable’s blood turned to ice.
Because she knew that voice.
She knew *them*.
And they were *here*.
