Chapter 9: The Invitation

Dana spent the night in her car.
Not because the motel was full — the motel had three empty rooms and Mrs. Calloway at the front desk had extended the offer twice, with the particular insistence of someone who wanted Dana somewhere specific. Which was exactly why Dana declined.
She parked on the eastern road where she could see the town's main intersection and went through everything she'd written. Twelve hours in Calloway. Every resident she'd spoken to had offered the same account of Mira Vasquez's disappearance: left town voluntarily, no forwarding address, good riddance. The phrases weren't identical — the residents were too careful for that — but the structure was. The emotional register was. The way each of them paused at the same moment before answering, as if checking something internal.
Nobody was lying. She'd been interviewing people for eleven years and she knew what lying looked like. This was something else.
She pulled out the original invitation. Handwritten, postmarked Calloway, no return address. *You should come for the anniversary. There's a story here you don't know yet.* Her name on the envelope, her direct address at the paper — not the general newsroom address, but hers specifically.
Somebody in this town wanted her here.
Not to expose whatever the town was hiding. If that were the goal, they would have simply told her.
Somebody wanted her to see that every resident had the same story.
That was the story.
She started the car. The motel could wait. She needed to find who had sent the invitation.
