Chapter 22: Thornwood's Future
1,100 words · 5 min read
Yara's institute published its first Thornwood research paper in the second year.
Not the map — nothing from the archive went into the publication, on Mira's recommendation and Root's implicit indication. The publication was based on Yara's own observations, rigorously documented, carefully framed to describe the forest's properties without revealing the things that would make it a target.
It was received well by the ecological research community. Three other researchers requested access.
Yara brought them to the edge of the forest and explained, in terms she had developed carefully, what the research relationship with Thornwood required: patience, honesty, the willingness to let the forest decide what to show. Not every researcher who came understood this. The ones who didn't experienced what the guild's first surveyor had experienced: routes that didn't work, days that ran in circles.
The ones who did were shown things.
By the third year there were six researchers with ongoing observation access to Thornwood's external ecology. None of them had been to the center. None of them had seen the pool. The forest managed this itself — it knew where its boundaries were and enforced them with the same elegant mechanism it had always used: not prohibition, but confusion.
Mira observed this with the satisfaction of something working as intended.
'It's choosing its own researchers,' she told Root.
Root's response: it had always been choosing. She was the first to build a framework that made the choosing systematic.
'The map,' she said. 'It's a protocol, not just a document.'
Root's response: *yes.*
