Chapter 21: The Map That Stays

1,100 words · 5 min read

In her third year in Thornwood, Mira completed the true map. Not the deliverable — that had been done. The complete map: the external geography, the internal structures, the memory pool, the archive, the fifteen accumulation points she'd identified in three years of careful work, the seasonal configurations, the species distributions that the botanist had started and she had extended into a full record. It was the most comprehensive cartographic document of a place she had ever produced. She had spent years on projects that were technically more complex, with larger teams and better equipment. This one was done by hand, on bark pages, with a notation system she'd developed herself because the standard systems didn't have vocabulary for half of what she was recording. She laid it out in the workspace Root had made for her — the full sequence of pages, in order, the complete record of what Thornwood was. Root was present with the quality of full attention. 'This stays here,' Mira said. 'I'm not taking it out. The deliverable guild map exists for external use. This one belongs to the forest.' Root's response was not quite gratitude — it was more like recognition. The response of something that had been seen correctly after a long time of being seen incorrectly. 'I want it to be useful,' Mira continued. 'Not preserved. If someone comes who should have access to it, they should have it. If Yara's institute needs a section for their research, they should have that section.' She looked at the map. 'I didn't make this for the archive. I made it to be used.' Root's response: *we understand the difference. We have always understood it. This is why we showed you the pool.*
