Chapter 12: The True Map

She had been working on two maps.
This was something she hadn't fully articulated to herself until she was sitting with Root's documentation problem and her own cartographic ethics. But it was true: from the beginning of her time in Thornwood, she had been producing two different records.
The first was the deliverable. The map the guild had commissioned. It showed routes, landmarks, boundaries — the external geography of Thornwood that a traveler would need. It was accurate and useful and it contained none of the things that would compromise the forest.
The second was what she'd been drawing on the bark pages Root had given her. The true map. The center, the pool, the accumulation points, the way the forest's structure related to its function. The map that would allow someone who understood it to understand what Thornwood actually was.
'The deliverable is safe,' she told Root. 'It shows what the forest looks like, not what it is. Anyone using it to replicate the environment will fail, but they'll fail the way they were going to fail anyway — because you can't replicate something by copying its surface.'
Root's attention indicated: *and the true map?*
'The true map stays here,' Mira said.
She hadn't made this decision consciously. She was making it now, and it felt settled — not a sacrifice, but the obvious right answer. The true map was the forest's, not the guild's. She had drawn it at Root's invitation, with Root's cooperation, using Root's bark pages. It would remain in Thornwood, in the specific location where it was most accurate, updated by whatever cartographer the forest chose to invite next.
'I am not the last person you'll invite,' she said.
Root's response was: *no. But you were the one we needed first.*
